Jane’s Addiction Show Ends Early After Perry Farrell Attacks Dave Navarro
In a dramatic turn of events on September 13, Jane’s Addiction’s storied career took another shocking twist during their performance in Boston. The concert, held at Leader Bank Pavilion, was abruptly cut short after a physical altercation broke out between frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. The incident, which occurred during the ninth song of their set, “Mountain Song,” led to Farrell, 65, being restrained by crew members and bassist Eric Avery, who has rejoined the band after a 14-year hiatus, much to the excitement of fans.
The tension between Farrell and Navarro escalated when, during a performance of “Three Days,” Farrell’s frustration with Navarro reached a boiling point. The situation worsened during “Ocean Size,” where Farrell approached Navarro, nudged him aggressively, and then appeared to throw a punch. Fan-shot footage capturing the confrontation has since surfaced, adding to the widespread speculation and concern.
Farrell’s recent performances have come under scrutiny following lackluster shows in New York earlier this week. At these gigs, Farrell admitted to vocal difficulties, stating, “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. Something’s wrong with my voice. I just can’t get the notes out all of a sudden.” This confession fueled rumors about potential struggles with substance abuse, which have been circulating on social media.
In response to the disappointing New York shows, Avery took to Instagram, expressing optimism for the upcoming performance, saying, “Looking forward to getting another crack at this spectacular rooftop venue tonight. I’m optimistic we will be better.” However, the Boston incident has cast a shadow over the band’s current tour and future.
Jane’s Addiction is scheduled to perform next in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but the band has yet to address the recent altercation or provide any updates on their future plans. The group, which has a history of breaking up and reforming since their original split in 1991, remains shrouded in uncertainty following this latest upheaval.
This turbulence comes on the heels of the band’s return to their classic lineup for a May 23 show at London’s Bush Hall, where Navarro rejoined Farrell, Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins for the first time since 2021. Navarro’s absence in recent years was due to long COVID symptoms, leading to temporary replacements Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Troy Van Leeuwen of Queens of the Stone Age.
Amidst the chaos, Jane’s Addiction has been working on new music, with their latest release, “Imminent Redemption,” marking their first new track with the original lineup since 1990’s Ritual de lo Habitual. The future of the band, however, remains uncertain as they navigate the fallout from the Boston altercation.
